Show more »I have been raising questions with the MOD through my MP Shailesh Vara about the inadequate defense of Gibraltar in respect of major terrorist attack by means of seizing a major merchant ship (bulk oil or gas carrier)since mid 2009. To date the only response has been to state that current naval and army units on the Rock could be reinforced 'if specific intelligence' is received and that we do not have any anti-shipping assets to commit. Last month I visited Gibraltar again and spoke with a number of people who told me there had been numerous incidents with the Spanish authorities as well as security breaches in the naval dockyard involving anti-nuclear protesters boarding one of our nuclear attack submarines. I am waiting for fuller details of these incidents before passing them to my MP. I would ask Liam Fox what measures his party will take immediately upon election (ie not wait until the defense review) to ensure the proper defense of the people of Gibraltar and this key British strategic asset?
