I am a full time carer for my mother, and I have heard rumours that I might be forced to move over to ESA, instead of remaining on income Support. Do you know if this is true?

Show more »My wife lost her entitlement to Carers Allowance for our disabled son when she received 60% pension entitlement at age 64 years. This was after I reached the age of 65 and she used my entitlement to increase her pension to 60%. Prior to that she was receiving 45% pension and then a proportion of Carers Allowance to bring the amount equal to the Carers Allowance. Can you explain why both Carers allowance and the old age pension are deemed as benefits when a Person is only entitled to an amount of pension that is equal to the number of years of National Insurance contributions the person has made during their working life? Surely, if you are contributing toward your pension it cannot be considered a benefit, it is a right, otherwise under the term 'BENEFIT' everyone would get the same amount of old-age pension regardless of the amount of National Insurance contributions they have made! I would like an answer to this as I think this should be challenged in the European Parliament! Show less »

Show more »Dear Secretary of State, I am writing with respect to the latest publication from Centre for Cities. This is entitled 'Sticking Plaster or Stepping Stone' and the URL has been provided at the end of this letter. The report questions the rationale behind the Future Jobs Fund at a critical time. It sets out an alternative list of hotspots which should recieve prioritised funding. For example, Birmingham, Blackburn, Bolton and Stoke would not require funding as much as Aldershot, Gloucester and Milton Keynes. I understand that it would be to each local authority to make the case for funding from the Future Jobs Fund. However, this report has some issues which will re-emerge during scrutiny of the policy. I believe it would be interesting to know what would happen if the Government did not intervene. Specifically, I would be grateful if you could set out DWP's own forecast for youth unemployment between 2009 and 2012 in line with the recession forecast by HM Treasury, and if the recession is more severe. Could you also publish the rationale behind the Future Jobs Fund intervention in response to this report. Was intervention based primarily upon the grounds of equity or efficiency? http://www.centreforcities.org/assets/files/09-06-23%20Youth%20unemployment.pdf Show less »
