Show more »I have been raising questions with the MOD through my MP Shailesh Vara about the inadequate defense of Gibraltar in respect of major terrorist attack by means of seizing a major merchant ship (bulk oil or gas carrier)since mid 2009. To date the only response has been to state that current naval and army units on the Rock could be reinforced 'if specific intelligence' is received and that we do not have any anti-shipping assets to commit. Last month I visited Gibraltar again and spoke with a number of people who told me there had been numerous incidents with the Spanish authorities as well as security breaches in the naval dockyard involving anti-nuclear protesters boarding one of our nuclear attack submarines. I am waiting for fuller details of these incidents before passing them to my MP. I would ask Liam Fox what measures his party will take immediately upon election (ie not wait until the defense review) to ensure the proper defense of the people of Gibraltar and this key British strategic asset? Will our operational commitments be reduced, or will the defence budget be increased to account for the operational effort we are currently sustaining? To carry on as we are is unsustainable.

Is it the Conservatives policy to review the numer of Service Families Accomodation available in the UK.  As families we under increased pressure to move every time our spouse's are posted due to lack of housing, and the inflexibility of the JSP 464 rules on retention.  This means uprooting our lives on average every two years.  Now this may be acceptable to some, but I have a career and  my children's education suffers every time we move.  It is important I can continue in my career so that i can support my husband when he leaves the army.  We are living in modern times, the typical army wife is no longer the housewife who can be moved around with little disruption.  Not least the cost to the taxpayer to move us each time.  Defence Estates do not show any compassion and we find them extremely unhelpful.  My husband will be in Afghanistan from April, he was told about this in January, we are being made to move to Catterick Garrison as we were not permitted to retain our quarter so we now have to spend my husbands leave moving house, stressful enough with him going away for 6 months dont you think?  And to give up my job and move my childrens schooling again to move to an area where we do not know anyone and have no family nearby, i find that this is expectation is just a step too far and we are not being treated as a family of the soldier who is going to fight for his country but merely a number.  My story is not in isolation, many families are experiencing the same issues.  This is not the treatment we should expect from the modern army.

Show more »In the remarks on Arrse the Conservative position is to have  an SDR as soon as possible and to run at the same time a restructuring of MoD and defence Procurement.  Would it not be sensible to wait the outcome of the SDR so that we have the Defence Procurement that is required and the Ministry of Defence organised to properly fit the requirements of the Forces.  It would seem that MoD restructuring along with Defence Procurement changes would mean that the SDR would have to be tailored to meet these requirements rather than actual defence requirements. 1. Would a Conservatives Government give a better definition of what is a Veteran as the current definition by the Veterans Agency is "All those who have served in HM Armed Forces, including Volunteer and Regular Reserves" regardless of timescale. So those that have left a few weeks into basic training are classified the same as those that have done 10 years service or have been medical discharged.

    2. The Americans are far more proactive in the treated and benefits they give their service personnel and veterans for example nearly all US airlines, Amtrack, Greyhound Buses, Hotels and tourist venue give discounts to both US service personnel and veterans.

Many US organisations will give these discount to UK service personnel on production of a valid ID Card. I frequently visit the USA and have been advised by some organisations that would be will to extend the forces discount to UK Veterans if we had some valid form of ID.

Would a Conservative Government consider extending the availability of discounts in the UK and the US to veterans with a limited time of service and those discharged on medical grounds by the issuing of an ID card and also allow veterans to apply for the forces railcard discount card.

Such an ID Card would also allow veterans to identify themselves to the NHS as being veterans for the alleged fast tracking for service related treatment. Show less »
