I can't even compare to it myself as a Vietnamese born person. I'm actually a Vietnamese, French citizen who has lived in the UK for the past 7 years. I have now left London where I have lived for the past 5 years but during that time I have encountered, what I would call, a lot of narrow-minded people. My latest experience had been through the Employment Tribunal at Victory House, 30-34 Kingsway, London, WC2B 6EX, on 20 and 21 September 2010, case no.2202071/2010 "Marc Nguyen" V Accor Services (UK) Ltd. Unfortunately, my case had been decided by a patial and bias Chair person. In fact, while reading out loud, Judge Ms Lewzey, called me "Mr Chink" instead of "Mr Nguyen" in her conclusion statement. The word chink had been said a few times during the Hearing and in my own statement but I believe that no matter what Ms Lewzey thought of me, she should never have called me that way. So my questions for you would be: - Are you aware of such misbehaviour from a person that important and highly placed in the judicial system? Is it common practice for a Chair person to treat people she thought were in the wrong by humiliating them in public as if they have not been through enough already? The Vietnamese community is not important in number in the UK but that has left me really concerned about the promised welcome sought. In the hope to hear from you, I wish you all the best! Yours sincerely, Marc Nguyen Show less »

Show more »Dear Mark, I am currently a Masters student at Birkbeck College, University of London researching the UK-Vietnam's bilateral relationship as part of my dissertation in partial fulfillment for the MSc in Global Politics. My research is principally focused on the UK's development aid to Vietnam through DFID. Today I have been very fortunate to have spoken to Nguyen Thi Ngoc Minh, Programme Manager for DFID Vietnam in Hanoi. I am very pleased to know that DFID has contributed to Vietnam's social and economic development positively. I would like also to ask if you could be so kind to offer me a short perspective as to what extent and significance has DFID's aid to Vietnam contributed to reinforcing UK-Vietnam's bilateral relations? Your perspective would really help with my research. I look forward to hearing from you. There is considerable anxiety regarding the use of child labour in the production of items then purchased in "the West".  Children are portrayed as exploited, unrepresented, no inspections, no health and safety regulations or guidance.  Often these "factories" are run directly or at arms length by UK companies.

What role does the embassy play in ensuring that the UK is not de facto supporting the use of such economic drivers and ensuring that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child are (a) acknowledged and (b) implemented.
