Show more »The situation in Sri Lanka appears to be getting even worse. While western countries and India appear to have abandoned attempts to persuade the government to call off its military offensive against the Tamil Tigers, will the international community do something to protect human rights there and persaude the Government of Sri Lanka to come up with a realistic political settlement to the countries ethnic crisis. Sri Lanka now has one of the worlds worst records for media freedom and protection of minority communities. Despite repeated promises it is not devolving power in any meaningful sense to areas in the east of the country where the Tamil and Muslim communites form a majority. It continues to use force or the threat of force to overcome any political opposition by the minority communities.   Show less »
