As you may know this is something I have been working on for a number of years now. I have been extremely disappointed by the Government’s refusal first of all to set up an inquiry and then to implement the recommendations of the independent report chaired by Lord Archer. I am still fighting to get people infected with HIV and Hepatitis C the compensation and justice they deserve.
I met the Minister responsible in the Autumn and was frustrated by how little she was prepared to move on the Archer recommendations, but Government moves slowly and I was glad to see that in the week before Parliament was dissolved they finally decided to move forward the review of compensation payments for those with Hepatitis C from 2014 to later this year. Hopefully this will see better compensation for those affected and in a much more realistic time frame.
Finally, the Lib Dem manifesto includes a commitment to create a working group to determine compensation for the victims and their families. We are the only major party to include any reference to the scandal in our manifesto and I’m proud that we are committed to putting right this wrong.
