1. Would a Conservatives Government give a better definition of what is a Veteran as the current definition by the Veterans Agency is "All those who have served in HM Armed Forces, including Volunteer and Regular Reserves" regardless of timescale. So those that have left a few weeks into basic training are classified the same as those that have done 10 years service or have been medical discharged.
2. The Americans are far more proactive in the treated and benefits they give their service personnel and veterans for example nearly all US airlines, Amtrack, Greyhound Buses, Hotels and tourist venue give discounts to both US service personnel and veterans.
Many US organisations will give these discount to UK service personnel on production of a valid ID Card. I frequently visit the USA and have been advised by some organisations that would be will to extend the forces discount to UK Veterans if we had some valid form of ID.
Would a Conservative Government consider extending the availability of discounts in the UK and the US to veterans with a limited time of service and those discharged on medical grounds by the issuing of an ID card and also allow veterans to apply for the forces railcard discount card.
Such an ID Card would also allow veterans to identify themselves to the NHS as being veterans for the alleged fast tracking for service related treatment. Show less »
