I like the accountability and recognition a Mayor can have, however in Great Yarmouth we are a 2 tier authority. This means that any elected Mayor will not have the power that most people expect a Mayor to have as much of those powers remain with the County. It works best in a unitary area.
We are a small area too and the cost of this with the election as well could be as much as £200,000 and that is before the cost of acutally running a Mayor's office and what do we get for that?
Repalce a Leader with a Mayor, power moves from a cabinet and council to one person and we loose our civic Mayor who raises thousands for local charities.
I am in favour of DEM but not sure how it is useful for us as a small 2 tier area.
