Show more »Would members of the next Labour government make sure that all British state pensioners receive their annual indexing, no matter where in the world they have to live in retirement. These pensioners and their employers have, of course, paid into the National Insurance Fund while working in the UK. This is a compulsory payment and the NIF does contain enough to cover indexed pensions, but some pensioners are denied indexing just because they retire in the wrong country. During the good years of the Labour Party they did nothing to help their own state pensioners abroad, despite many many letters asking them for help. What are your thoughts about this? Show less »

I know you are busy but many pensioners would like to know if the frozen pension problem be faced fair and square by the coalition, as the LibDems seemed to be planning before the election or will it be swept under the carpet once more? A short reply would be better than nothing. Show less »

Show more » Dear Steve Webb Before the election, half of the British state pensioners who live abroad and who have their pensions frozen were looking forward to you and Nick Clegg tabling an EDM which could lead to the unfreezing of their pensions. Mine was frozen for 13 years while in Australia. Now that you are both in more elevated positions we have not heard mention of unfreezing from either of you. Perhaps I have missed something? In your speech yesterday you said “The state pension must be the foundation on which all other pensions policy is based and we will help ensure this by restoring the link between pensions and earnings.”. Does this mean that you intend to unfreeze pensions as promised, or does it mean that ALL pensions abroad will now be frozen? You reassurance would be welcome! Show less »

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions

Show more »Dear Iain Duncan Smith I have a question which only you can answer. Of the one million British State Pensioners now living abroad after working in the UK and paying into the National Insurance Fund, half have their pensions annually indexed to help them deal with increases in the cost of living, but the other half have their basic pensions frozen with no indexing at all, leaving many of them unable to deal with these increases. Please explain, honestly, as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, why our government plans to continue with this social injustice, unfairness and shabby treatment of our own old people, just because they, or the relatives they wish to live near, are living in, or moving to the "wrong" country. I have not seen any change mentioned in the manifestos of either the Conservatives or the Liberal Democrats despite friendly and understanding words from Nick Clegg and a welcome video reply on YOOSK from Peter Bottomley. I may of course be mistaken. I hope I am. There is a surplus in the National Insurance Fund of 120 times the amount needed annually to immediately upgrade frozen pensions. It is there to use for pensions, among other services. Despite the present crunch, it is affordable. My question is: "Do you plan to treat all state pensioners fairly, no matter where in the world they live, or do you plan to keep the status quo?" Show less »

Show more »What are your views about denying pensioners their indexing just because they live in a Commonwealth country (or a motley collection of other countries)? They are not denied cost-of-living indexing if they live in Europe or the USA (or a different motley collection of other countries). I am asking about pensioners who paid their National Insurance dues while working in the UK but had to go abroad on retirement to be near relatives or for some other reason. More often than not there was no choice of country. My own pension was frozen while in Australia with my husband who was working there. Indexed or not, pensioners save the government a great deal if they live outside the UK so why the inequality? It is a crazy rule. Show less »

Show more »Dear Diane Abbott It was so good to hear a cheerful sense of humour this morning when you were interviewed on BBC4. I would like to know what you think the Labour party should do about the plight of half our British state pensioners who have retired overseas, only to find their pensions frozen at the very first amount. Each year the value of their income drops, until it is worth practically nothing at all in very old age. The other half who live abroad receive their expected annually indexed pension because they happen to live in a different collection of countries. Do you agree that all pensioners should receive their fully indexed pensions, after paying into the National Insurance Fund while working in the UK, no matter where they live in retirement?
