I think the biggest power that EU countries have to change poorer countries is by changing the import tariffs - for example if a country doesn't educate women or have accessable health services then it could be charged a higher tariff. On the other hand the specialists in government international development are in national ministries geared mainly to spending money to help poor countries. Could the EU tariffs committee do more to work with international development ministers? Or do we have to spend money on the poor in the third world while the rich in the third world and buy Mercedez parts by airmail? Show less »
