Gordon Brown, How can you, an un-elected Prime Minister of the British Isles, tell us that you are going to deny us the referendum on the new European Treaty/Constitution, which your party promised us in its manifesto? What happened to your personal promisees of open government? You have closed the door firmly shut on this one, and the British people want it open again.

TimHood at Aug 31 2007 12:00:00 AM : Quite right Peter- perhaps the PM can kill two birds with one stone and call a general election. Then we can make a decision both on whether he will remain PM and whether we want the new treaty...

peterthurgood at Aug 31 2007 12:00:00 AM : Gordon Brown tries to make us believe that he is different from Tony Blair. He has proved, by his stance on the promised referendum, that there is no difference between them. Both are liars.

bonzo1 at Sep 01 2007 12:00:00 AM : Your point about liars is an interesting one Peter. I don't think even Tony Blair's mother would defend him against the charge - but Gordon brown? To call him a liar for going back on a manifesto promise - is a little harsh. The other point about calling people liars is that, who isn't a liar? I certainly can't claim to have never told a lie - can you? Politicians are probably the most notorious liars of all and we have a history of lying PM's - Margaret Thatcher was probably the most shameless one.Are there any politicians you trust not to lie or go back on their word if the situation suited them? I can't think of any.

peterthurgood at Sep 01 2007 12:00:00 AM : I am not asking or saying, who else might or might not be a liar. I am stating categorically, that Gordon Brown is a liar. There is quite a lot more in Brown's insistence to back on his promises, which in fact adds up to a lie in itself. There is also the "little" matter of Mr Brown stating that the new European Treaty/Constitution has not changed significantly, and does not present any threat to the UK. Outright lies! And why on earth bring Margaret Thatcher into the argument? Who will you drag in next, Lloyd George?

bonzo1 at Sep 02 2007 12:00:00 AM : Peter, you still haven't convinced me that Gordon Brown can be called a liar over this issue. If you can show me that he believes, as you do, that the European Treaty will be a threat to the UK and yet is telling the rest of us that it won't be a threat - then yes, call him a liar. However, I don't think this is the case and calling him a liar because he doesn't happen to agree with you is unfair. I bring Margaret Thatcher into this to demonstrate that PM's telling lies is not unusual and not restricted to Labour PM's - and i mention it as a counter to your apparent outrage that a PM should have told a lie.

peterthurgood at Sep 04 2007 12:00:00 AM : My original question on here, wasn't to prove to anyone that Gordon Brown is a liar or not. It was a straight forward question, asking Mr Brown why he is denying the British people the referendum he promised us. But, since "Bonzo" is asking me to convince him that Brown is a liar, I will try my best to do so. An example for instance, would be a gambler running out of cash and then writing out an I.O.U to his opponent for X amount of money. An I.O.U., is a personal promise to pay the person it is made out to, that amount of money. If the gambler then refuses to pay his debt, he has lied to the other person by promising that amount and then going back on his word. This is exactly what Gordon Brown has done to the British public, he has lied to us, by going back on his word.
