Ask Eastenders actress Tanya Franks.
Award winning British actress Tanya Franks rose to fame in one of the UK’s most popular shows ‘Family Affairs’. Controversial story lines like playing a bi-sexual mother made her a viewers favourite. No stranger to crazy roles Tanya is probably most famous for her role as the drunken primary school teacher ‘Karen’ in the BBC’s award winning comedy series ‘Pulling’. Showing her dramatic side Tanya played ‘DCI Morell’ in the high rating national police drama ‘The Bill’. Other national roles include ‘Ashes To Ashes’, ‘Skins’, ‘The Cup’, ‘Eastenders’, ‘Holby City’ and ‘Doctors’.
Tanya is also the founder of Stock-pot Productions writing and producing film – her shorts include ‘One Day’ (Kodak Best Short Film Finalist), ‘Missing’, and ‘The Briefcase That Brings Out The Baby In You’. These have screened at national and international film festivals and she is in development with her first feature.
Tanya is about to hit our screens again playing ‘Dolly’ in the ever popular CBBC series ‘Hotel Trubble’ and by popular demand is back on screen in the UK’s number 1 Soap ‘Eastenders’ playing ‘Rainie’..

Presumably, a permanent role on Eastenders would mean you giving up your other interests - your production company, theatre, screenwriting....... - so would you take one if the chance came along? When I enjoy playing a role I don't worry about what I have to give up for it - usually it is just a little delay, not having to give them up completely. There are often bits of free time around shooting... There are often bits of free time around shooting as a regular in a series, so it is certainly feasible to juggle the writing. Who knows what will happen with EastEnders in the future, I weigh up each proposition as it comes along.

Did you do any kind of research if any to play Rainie in Eastenders?

Yes, lots. The producers put me in touch with DrugScope who were a great help, and of course there was a lot of video footage, reading material, talking to people, etc.

I am very fortunate to get a lot of diversity within the roles I play at the moment. I don't worry about what medium it is in.
