Stansted Airport expansion: Good for society or environmental disaster?

The Public Enquiry into the expansion of Stansted airport ended on the 19 October 2007, as this local newspaper, the Bishop’s Stortford Citizen reports. This BBC news article reports, the expansion would potentially double the number of passengers using the airport but could also destroy the quality of life of the local community and local wildlife habitats.

The owners of Stansted airport, BAA Plc are fighting for its expansion - “to give millions of leisure and business travelers the opportunity to travel to more destinations - which is good news for the economy and tourism".

However, near to the airport is Hatfield Forest, a 1000 year old hunting forest threatened by the development. The impact of noise in the region will greatly affect the local community who will loose 73 homes and many wildlife sites.

This article gives concerned local people and environmental campaigners the opportunity to ask questions directly to key Stansted airport business leaders about the environmental and social impact of the runways they use and run, and to key figures opposed to the expansion.
