The Future for Energy & Climate Change

The last decade saw environmental issues surrounding energy and climate change surge to the fore amongst businesses, governments and individuals across the globe.

What was once a fringe issue is now not only big business, but an essential question that needs to be solved quickly to ensure that the planet's finite resources are used efficiently with the minimum damage to our environment.

Regular meetings between international delegates responsible for the policies that should tackle climate change like last week's summit in Cancun have been trying desperately to come to agreements that can start to solve the problems in a way that the international community can all agree on. Problems like carbon emissions and deforestation are vital ones to solve and Britain has been a key nation in the negotiations.

Britain is also in the middle of trying to solve their own problems at home, especially regarding energy and the constant struggle between the pros and cons of nuclear energy, sustainable energy systems like wind or solar power and fossils fuels such as North Sea gas.

With energy prices becoming as great a problem as the impact on our planet, and the spotlight increasingly turning on what energy companies can do to reduce the financial burden on individuals, we have assembled a cross party panel of three MPs to answer your questions on the debate.

John Robertson (Labour) and Laura Sandys (Conservative) are both members of the Energy and Climate Change select committee. Meanwhile Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, Malcolm Bruce, knows many of the issues first hand as his constituency of Gordon has geographic links to Britain's North Sea energy sources.
